Dark circles? A nightmare, I know! Let’s discover more about it and see what we can do about it!

How many times, after a shift on the plane or on the train (in my actual case), you can’t recognize yourself in the mirror? Especially after a long haul flight, the Jet-lag, you didn’t sleep, for so many hours around the globe and all the other related problems.

“Wow Giada, why do you look so tired?” my friends said to me one night while we were out to eat. Everybody at the table laughed. I was so embarrassed. “No,” I said, “It is just the dark circles under my eyes.”

Does this ever happen to you? I also get the same question at work a lot, but you know, we should always look fresh and groomed, because it’s part of our job. Thankfully, I have found something that finally works at hiding them.

We all know how irritating those dark circles under our eyes can be. It makes you look tired and older than you really are. How can we help cover up dark circles under your eyes? First, we need to know what causes them.

THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS FOR DARK CIRCLES AND BAGS UNDER EYES:

1) You inherited your dark circles from your family

Yep, you can blame them on your genes. Some families have hereditary conditions that cause darkness under the eyes. It has to do with the pigmentation under our skin and the thin layer of skin below the eyes.

2) Allergies

Your allergies cause your blood vessels to dilate. Since the skin under our eyes is very thin, it causes those swollen blood vessels to appear darker than they really are.

3) Eczema

Even this skin condition can cause dark circles under eyes. The eczema itself is not causing your dark circle but the continual rubbing of the eyes is. It causes increased swelling, inflammation, and broken blood vessels in the eye area making it look like dark circles.

4) Bone Structure

The way your face is shaped could be the cause of dark circles. It could cause your face to indent right under the eyes that cause a look of shadows.

5) The sun

It’s nice to have a layover in the Maldives, right? But wait, you always have to protect your face from the sun! Even when you’re already tan! It’s so important! Since the area under the skin is so sensitive, the sun can cause damage to the blood vessels thus resulting in a dark look under our eyes.

6) The color of your veins.

Do you have blue veins or brown veins under your eyes? Look in the mirror and lower your chin just a little bit. Can you see blue or brown veins? Blue veins are more noticeable in the morning when you first wake up. Your body has been laying in a horizontal position for hours and the veins have expanded to hold more blood. Blue veins also seem to get worse with age. Brown circles result from hyper-pigmentation resulting from endless eye rubbing, sun damage, or genetics.

WHY ARE MY DARK CIRCLES GETTING WORSE?

As I age, my dark circles seem to get worse. As we age, our skin gets thinner around the eyes and you start to lose the fat and collagen that you need for the skin’s elasticity. Some other causes may be:

- Oversleeping

- Extreme exhaustion

- Staying up a few hours past your normal bedtime

- Dehydration

- Illness

Now that we know the causes. What can we do about them? There are many products out there that work, but I’m going to share with you what works for me. So many products I’ve tried never worked for me. I have tried a lot over the years. I finally found something that helps. It doesn’t get rid of it completely, but it’s the best at making them look less hideous.

First, eating healthier has a lot to do with it. When I’m eating more greens and foods with fiber, my bags and circles seem to diminish more. Also, drinking more water helps with blood circulation. Once you’ve changed some of your eating habits, you can start using products to assist in the aid of hiding dark circles under your eyes.

NOW, THAT WE HAVE PRODUCTS TO HELP REDUCE DARK CIRCLES, LEARN HOW TO COVER UP DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES WITH THE CONCEALER.

I usually recommend different tones of concealer, based on your dark circles’ color.

- ORANGE is opposite from blue. If you have darker skin with blue dark circles, orange will work to help conceal the uneven undertones. People with lighter skin should avoid orange and instead use a peach color corrector.

- PINK concealer is usually salmon or peach in tone and is created from a mix of red, orange, and yellow hues. Since these colors are opposite from blue, green, and purple on the wheel, this corrector is best for hiding dark eye circles on lighter skin tones.

- YELLOW color correcting concealer can be used to cover up any blemish that’s purple in tone. Bruises, veins, and under eyes circles can be hidden with a yellow spot concealer.

Another tip: try Rose Water to diminish dark circles!

Dip a cotton pad into rose water and place over eye lids for 10-15 minutes every night. After two weeks you’ll notice a big difference.
